In celebration of Black History Month internationally acclaimed dub poet, social critic, radio commentator, performer and actor, MUTABARUKA will present a spoken word and poetry presentation. Mutabaruka (formerly Allan Hope) was born in Rae Town, Kingston; December 26, 1952. He was the first well-publicized voice in the new wave of poets growing since the early 1970s. Mutabaruka; Jamaica's voice of the people and radio show host has a recording career spanning over 21 years with over 9 albums, two books and multiple contributions as a guest artist. His views on politics, religion and justice are insightful, powerful and controversial. As one of Jamaica's leading artist, he is the leading exponent of the genre known as "dub poetry". However, to call him merely a "dub poet" belies his accomplishments in music production, radio, film and business. He has released nine albums to date focusing on social justice and human rights. His most important contribution to Afro-Jamaica culture may be his weekly radio program, The Cutting Edge which airs weekly on IRIE FM in Jamaica. When on air, the voice of Mutabaruka speaks to and for a host of troubled young people. As the jingle says, “thought provoking, always smoking, lyrics like a bazooka, you are listening to Mutabaruka!" Also on the program will be Django Pan Fyah, a Black History Youth Presentation, Hamilton’s up and coming Singing Sensation; Tiana Trafficante, and Hamilton’s #1 Dub Poet; Klyde Broox!
